Celebrate National Osteopathic Week 2018
Walk with a Doc Event!
Each year, the American Osteopathic Association encourages DO’s across the country to celebrate this great profession in mid-April.
For 2018, the Foundation has set a goal to assist with the organization of 25 Walk with a Doc events between April 14 and 22.
What is Walk with a Doc?
Founded in 2005, Walk With A Doc is a not-for-profit organization that assists physicians, physician groups and health care organizations in putting on a simple walking opportunity for patients and local physicians. All it takes is a 5 minute talk about wellness, a place to walk and a simple marketing plan to get the word out to the target audience.
Meet Janessa Sickler, DO
Dr. Sickler practices medicine in John Day, OR, a small community of about 2,000 people in the rural NE part of the state. As a resident from the Cascades East Family Practice program in Klamath Falls, OR, Dr. Sickler participated in Walk with a Doc. Seeing the need with her new patients, she helped organize the program with Blue Mountain Hospital.
On a snowy day in January, her Walk with a Doc event had almost 40 participants of every age and ability. As people arrived at the local high school gym and signed in, Dr. Sickler met everyone with a big smile. After a few warm up laps, she gather everyone together for a brief presentation, then back to the walking. Over the next 45 minutes, she made her way through the group chatting and answering questions.
It’s really just that simple, but we all know the impact regular exercise like walking can do for physical, mental and spiritual health.
